ストイックな一人旅だ。自身を見つめ、自身を追い込んで、袋小路に陥っても誰にも頼ることはできない。そんなストレスを感じると、JBは旅先で安い肉を貪り食べる。肉に多く含まれるたんぱく質が、交感神経の緊張を和らげてくれる。何気なく入った安いステーキハウス。そこには変わったメニューがあった。塩麹に漬け込んだステーキだ。発酵調味料の塩麹は、安く硬い肉を軟らかくする効果がある。まるで、一人で抱え込んでこわばった心を解きほぐしてくれる誰かのようだ、とJBは思った。友人や家族、或いは恋人。そんな帰る場所を夢想しながら、JBは安いステーキを頬張る。自分も誰かにとってそんな存在になれるのだろうか。さっきよりほんの少し穏やかな気持ちで、緩く自省するJBであった。

水上人形劇をご存知だろうか。ベトナムに古くから伝わる伝統芸能で、ため池に腰まで浸かって水上の人形を操作する独特な人形劇である。通常5年ほどかける人形の操作の修行をFLAGはもう12年は続けているが、未だに習得できない。水が苦手なのだ。古代ギリシャの哲学者タレスは万物の根源は「水」であると言ったが、苦手なものはしょうがない。FLAGの生活はこんな感じだ。食事はいつも水を使わないカレー。風呂には入らず水のいらないシャンプーで全身を洗う。洗濯は水を使わない洗濯機。節水どころの騒ぎではない。先月の水道代はなんと0ドン。0ドンである。そんなFLAGが頑張って一人前の水上人形使いになろうとしているのだ。温かい目で見守ってあげようではないか。もっとも、12年かけて達成したのは足首まで水に浸かることまでだが。もちろん、人形にはまだ触れてもいない。

He never takes shower and washes his whole body only with shampoo. When he does laundry, he uses a washing machine that doesn’t require water. He doesn’t bother to save water. FLAG’s water bill last month was 0 ton. Yes, 0 ton. But he is trying so hard to become a water puppeteer. Well, he needs warm encouragement. Apparently, it took him 12 years to stand in the water that reaches his ankle. Of course, he hasn’t even touched the puppet yet.
